The School of Physical Education is one of the second-level teaching units of the Institute. The School offers two undergraduate programs, namely Community Sports Guidance and Management, and Physical Education, and one postgraduate program, namely Master of Physical Education. It consists of the sub-sections such as Department of Community Sports, Department of Physical Education, Department of Physical Education Theory, Office I for PE Teaching, Office II for PE Teaching, Office for Mass Sports Competition and Training, Testing Centre for “National Physical Health Standard for College Students”, and Laboratory of Body Science. It mainly undertakes the PE teaching work, sport training, mass sports and contest, and physical quality test for all the undergraduates of the Institute, as well as the teaching and administrative work for PE majors.
The School has 61 faculty members, including 52 full-time teachers and 6 guest professors. There are 8 professors and doctors, 19 associate professors and more than 40 holders of Master’s degree or Doctor’s degree. The School has more than 600 full-time undergraduates.
The PE teaching facilities are complete, including one indoor multi-purpose training hall, one indoor swimming pool, track & field stadium, basketball court, volleyball court, and tennis court, with the gross area of these sports buildings up to about 90,000 square meters.
The School has 12 bases for teaching practice and training, 4 teaching laboratories, 1 first-level key discipline of the Institute, and 1 characteristic major – Community Sports Guidance and Management. It has the National Training Base for Professional Qualification of Sports Industry and the Provincial Training Base for Community Sport Instructor. It also joins in the Postgraduate Education Alliance of Physical Education of Henan Province.
In recent years, the faculty members have presided over or participated in more than 180 research projects at or above the department level, published more than 600 articles in public academic journals, completed 7 teaching reform projects at or above the provincial level, compiled more than 60 textbooks, and attained 12 utility model patents and more than 300 prizes of various teaching and research achievements.
In recent years, the School has undertaken many sports events, such as the “26th National College Students Handball Championship”, “Henan Youngsters Traditional Martial Arts Championship” and “1st Henan Youngsters Karate Championship”. It has also conducted over 10 times of training for Karate coaches and referees, community sports instructors, referees and coaches of traditional martial arts, boxing coaches and lifeguards in Henan Province, with a total number of more than 2,300 persons being trained.
The students in the School have ever made great achievements in some national or provincial sports events, such as 2 second prizes in the Asian Lawn Bowls Championship; 1 first prize, 2 second prizes and 4 third prizes in the National College Students Handball Championship; 2 first prizes, 6 third prizes, 9 fourth prizes, 11 fifth prizes and 13 sixth prizes in the National Bocce Championship; 1 second prize, 1 third prize, 1 fifth prize, 2 seventh prizes and 2 eighth prizes in the National College Students Martial Arts Championship; 3 second prizes and 4 third prizes in the National College Health Qigong Competition; 3 second prizes, 8 fourth prizes and 7 sixth prizes in Henan College Students Track and Field Sports Meet; 7 first prizes, 3 second prizes and 4 third prizes, 6 fourth prizes, 4 fifth prizes and 4 sixth prizes in Henan College Students Martial Arts Competition; 1 second prize and 1 third prize in the first women’s group of Henan College Students Basketball Match; and 1 second prize in Henan Volleyball Match.
